Publication Use

Similar to a card image, finding an image used in a publication may add new context or insights and can possibly increase the photograph’s intrinsic value.

1904 Willie Keeler Photograph– DEACCESSIONED

A broadly designated “1900’s” Willie Keeler photograph by The Pictorial News Co. can now be rolled back to at least 1904 (likely spring training in Atlanta, GA), as the image was used on the cover of this August 27, 1904 Tip Top Weekly and even earlier, in this May 28, 1904 Police Gazette pictorial spread, courtesy of Doug Goodman. There may have been some copyright dodging by the folks at Tip Top Weekly, as several of the cover images, at least appear to be, modeled after images of the era. Note the subtle changes made to either body positioning or clothing, or both.

1911 Eddie Collins Photo– DEACCESSIONED

This “1910’s” Eddie Collins photo year has been pinned down using multiple factors. First, the 1912 Leslie’s All-American Team article using the Collins photo (courtesy Huggins & Scott) narrows the possible date range within the multi-year Athletics’ uniforms. Then the full (uncropped) version (courtesy Leland’s auction house) is reviewed to find a single year (1911) New York Highlanders cap and stocking combination, as no other team’s donned the same uniforms that also overlap with Collins’ uniform.

1946 Ted Williams Photograph– DEACCESSIONED

Although the above Ted Williams image was used for his 1950 and 1951 Bowman cards, the image use was found in the November 29, 1946 The Sporting News announcing his MVP win. The image use for the cards is significant, but the image origin year of 1946 adds to its importance.

1888 NY Giants vs Philadelphia Opening Day at the Polo Grounds– DEACCESSIONED

A 1910’s Re-Strike of opening day at the Polo Grounds in 1888. The scarce image was used in 1916 for a full page “Old Times” New York Giants article coordinating with the New York Giants adding James Mutrie to the salary list for the rest of his life, at $25 per week. The image is the same used to create the 1888 NY Giants Cabinet Card, courtesy of Heritage Auctions.

1901 Christy Mathewson Photograph– DEACCESSIONED

This 1920’s re-strike of an image of Christy Mathewson from 1901, was used in a 1920 Mid-Week Pictorial referenced, “Christy Mathewson as he looked when he first wore a Giants uniform and “broke in” to the big leagues in 1900.” Also note the back of the photograph with the pencil inscription, ” Christy Mathewson when he first came to New York.” Mathewson is donning the 1900-1901 uniform, but the image may have been taken in Spring of 1902, wearing last years uniform- a common practice. Also, note the paper tag on the obverse of the photograph, incorrectly attributing the photo to Charles Conlon.

1911 Ed Walsh Batting Photograph– DEACCESSIONED

Although the Walsh swinging image is not the exact image used in several 1911 newspapers, the background and rudimentary structure are the same solidifying the location. The photograph of Henry “Southpaw Dutch” Hinrichs with the same structure visible solidifies the year, as Hinrichs was invited to spring training in 1911 by the White Sox, but did not make the team, nor did he ever pitch in the major leagues. The White Sox used Mineral Wells, TX as their Spring training home base in 1911, but ventured out to even smaller towns playing local teams; These photos were likely taken in one of those towns, as the ballpark at Mineral Wells had fencing around the entire perimeter, as shown in this March 7, 1911 newspaper image.

1913 Fred Merkle sliding Photograph by Charles Conlon– DEACCESSIONED

This atypical aerial view photograph taken by Charles Conlon, catches New York Giant Fred Merkle (of bonehead fame), making the slide safely to third, while Philadelphia’s Hans Lobert misses the tag. Conlon’s handwritten notes can be seen on the back of the photo, along with his “stamp” of sorts- an encircled “Conlon Photo”. The image was used in the the 1913 Spalding’s Guide, however, some editing was done to make the umpire look closer to the play.

1911 Leslie’s Baseball Article- The College Man as a Professional Ball Player

An interesting article, authored by (future) Hall of Famer Billy Evans in 1911, discussing the increasing trend of “University Boy[s]” in the Big Leagues. Four of the five player photographs (or images) have been located, with all that are found linked to the Cleveland area, either by location image origin or to Cleveland based photographer Louis Van Oeyen. Note that the last (and only unlocated) image is of Eddie Collins, and his image has been reversed, as Collins is portrayed as a lefty. With the publication year of 1911, this suggests a 1910 or 1909 image of Collins, and is likely connected to Cleveland or Louis Van Oeyen, in some way.
