Production Pieces

These photographs are the actual production photos and/or artwork used to produce the cards, supplements or advertisements or they are photos believed to have been used in the production process- as trials, samples or mock-ups.

They have been transformed from photographs to art and ultimately, in to artifacts.

1910 “Wahoo” Sam Crawford Fielding Photograph

The production art used to create the 1916 Police Gazette Supplement- DEACCESSIONED

A photograph that seems to match (in uniform and location) the subject photograph was recently auctioned at Love of the Game Auctions.

By keeping an eye out for similar matching photographs and elements, we were able to definitively date the subject Sam Crawford photograph, while maintaining the artistic integrity of the production photograph.

1948 Satchel Paige Rookie (MLB) Photograph

Used in the production of the 1948 Cleveland Indians Team Issued Postcard

Note the slightly different location of the lettering and it’s exact font match. This photo was likely used to mock-up Paige’s name, as to best contrast against his uniform front. By using a clear transparency film with Paige’s name handwritten upon it, the transparency film could be moved, then a photograph (of the photograph) could be taken, resulting in the subject Type 3 photograph.

1927 Tris Speaker Photograph by Charles Conlon-DEACCESSIONED

The photograph (which was once mounted to artist board) was used to create the Exhibits postcard. The photograph was removed from the artist board to reveal a Charles M. Conlon Evening Telegram stamp, along with hand labeling in Conlon’s hand.

Mounted photo measures 5.5″ X 8.5″

1933 New York Giants Team Photograph

The photograph used to create the 1933 World’s Champion Giants M114 Supplement

The photo masking and its exact subtleties and specifics, along with hand written “finish” dimensions and a Baseball Magazine sticker on the back of the photo confirm the photographs use and origin.

1909-10 Al Bridwell Sliding Photograph

The 6.5″ X 8.5″ photograph (mounted and edited) was used to create the Police Gazette pictorial. The protective cover sheet is still attached which has a fantastic blind stamp.

1909 Joe Lake pitching photograph and 1909 Harry McIntire pitching photograph

The 4.5″ X 6.5″ photograph was used to create the Police Gazette pictorial. The Arthur Raymond image was also featured in a full page individual supplement, suggesting the possibility of the same for Lake.

1907 Tim Jordan T3 Turkey Red Photograph

The 5″ X 7″ photograph exhibits editorial paint often used for publication and/or supplement production. This combined with the hand written note on the reverse, “Front Cover”, suggests that Jordan has a Police Gazette cover, although an example has not yet been found.

1915 Grover Cleveland Alexander Photograph

The 8″ X 10″ photograph was developed from a duplicate negative (a photo of a photo). We can confirm this by examining the photograph’s editorial markings, which are embedded in the photograph; However, the same almost overly embellished ballcap stictching lines are the same as the image used for the notebook cover. Compare those to a Type 1 photograph.
